Each of wife had a beautiful daughter, bawang merah and bawang putih. One day, the old man passed away. He left his wives and his daughter who never agreed with one another. Shortly after that, a tragic accident befell the first wife, leaving bawang putih at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and step sister. Actually, the death of bawang putihâs mother was not an accident. She was killed by bawang merahâs mother. She was drawned in a pond. Bawang merah and her mother hated bawang putih alot. Bawang putih should do all the housework with little food and short rest. One morning, bawang merah asked bawang putih to water her plants. âBawang putih, look all my plants. Bawang putih played the swing joyfully. At the same time, a handsome prince was hunting nearby and was enchanted by her beauty. He tried to get closer to her. Before he could approach her, bawang putih saw him and she run as fast as she could. The prince called out. âWait... lady.. waitâ The prince gave chase. Determined to find who she was. Bawang putih got into her house and hid in that. The prince met bawang merahâs mother. The prince questioned her âWho was the gorl I had seen in the pondâ Seeing the opportunity, she immediately said. âShe is my own beautiful and talented daughter, bawang merahâ âIâm the girl you are looking forâ said bawang merah. The prince was very happy bacause finally he found a girl who had captured his heart with her beautiful voice and beautiful face. The prince immediately asked for her hand in marriage. âBawang putih, will you marry me? Will you be my wife? You will be the next queen of this kingdom.â Bawang putih accepted that. Once upon a time in a village, lived a happy family. That family had a children named Bawang Putih. Her mother passed away due to her disease and now, Bawang Putih lived with her father only. In that village also, lived a widow with her daughter named Bawang Merah. They often visited Bawang Putih to deliver some food or just to talk. In short, Bawang Merahâs mother married with Bawang Putihâs father. Since that time, Bawang Putih no longer felt lonely because she getting a new mother and sister. However, over time its true nature appears. They often scolded Bawang Putih and gave her many hard house chores when their father was trading. But, Bawang Putih accepted her life steadfastly. One day, Bawang Putih washed Bawang Merah and her motherâs clothes in a river. Unfortunately, there was one clothes driting. So, Bawang Putih followed the river until she arrived at a grandmotherâs house. That grandmother found Bawang Putihâs drifting clothes and promised that she would give back the clothes if Bawang Putih helps her clean her house. They accept it, but they donât do it wholeheartedly. Finally the grandmother gave back their drifting clothes and asked them to choose one of her pumpkins. Of course they chose the big ones. When they got home, they opened the pumpkin immediately. But itâs not gold, itâs some snakes that chased them. They then ran, left their house and Bawang Putihâs village. The old lady knew where it was, but she said that Bawang Putih had to help her with some work first. Bawang Putih was happy to help and she cleaned and tidied up the cave. The old lady was very happy with her work. In the afternoon, Bawang Putih said goodbye to the old lady and the old lady gave her back the missing cloth and also offered her two pumpkins as a reward for her help. One pumpkin was big and the other was small. Bawang Putih was not greedy and she chose the smaller pumpkin. ==== When Bawang Putih returned home, her stepmother and stepsister were very angry because she was late. Bawang Putih told them what had happened and showed them the small pumpkin that the old lady had given her as a reward. But, her stepmother was still angry and took the pumpkin and threw it on the ground. âCrack!â the pumpkin broke, but something amazing happened, inside it was gold, diamonds, and precious gems. They were all very surprised. But, because her stepmother and stepsister were very greedy, they were still angry with Bawang Putih for choosing the smaller pumpkin. They said that if she had chosen the bigger pumpkin, there would have been even more gold, diamonds, and precious gems inside it. ==== Bawang Merah saw how Bawang Putih found a pumpkin with gold and jewels, so she wanted to try too. She made her stepmotherâs cloth disappear and went to the river asking people if they saw it. She finally got to the cave where the old lady lived. Unlike Bawang Putih, Bawang Merah was lazy and didnât want to help the old lady. She even demanded the old lady to give her the big pumpkin. The old lady gave her the big pumpkin and Bawang Merah was very happy and brought it home. She imagined all the gold, diamonds, and precious gems that would be inside it. Her stepmother was also happy to see her. They both were excited to open the big pumpkin. But, when they opened it, instead of gold and precious gems, out came snakes and other venomous animals. They both ran away scared. They understood their bad behavior and apologized to Bawang Putih. Namun, ibu tirinya masih marah dan mengambil labu itu dan melempar ke tanah. âBrak!â labu itu pecah, tetapi sesuatu yang aneh terjadi, di dalamnya terdapat emas, intan dan permata yang berharga. Mereka semua sangat terkejut. Namun, karena ibu dan saudari tirinya serakah, mereka malah marah pada Bawang Putih karena memilih labu yang lebih kecil. Mereka mengatakan bahwa jika dia memilih labu yang lebih besar, di dalamnya akan ada lebih banyak lagi emas, intan, dan permata. ==== Bawang Merah mencoba cara Bawang Putih menemukan labu dengan emas dan permata tersebut. Bawan Merah pergi ke sungai dan menghanyutkan kain milik ibunya. Ia menanyakan kepada orang-orang apakah mereka melihatnya. Akhirnya dia sampai di gua di mana nenek tua tinggal. Nenek tua itu dimana kain tersebut dan akan memberikannya setelah Bawang Merah membantu membereskan rumahnya. Namnun tidak seperti Bawang Putih, Bawang Merah malas dan tidak mau membantu nenek tua. Dia bahkan meminta nenek tua untuk memberinya labu besar. Nenek tua memberikan labu besar itu kepadanya. Bawang Merah sangat senang dan membawanya pulang. Dia membayangkan emas, intan, dan permata yang akan ada di dalamnya. Ibunya juga senang melihatnya. Mereka berdua sangat bersemangat untuk membuka labu besar itu. Tetapi ketika mereka membukanya, bukan emas dan permata yang keluar tapi ular dan binatang berbisa lainnya. Mereka berdua kaget dan lari terbirit-birit. Mereka menyadari perilaku buruk mereka dan meminta maaf pada Bawang Putih. Bawang Putih yang baik hati memaafkan mereka.
